I have to say that I am none too impressed with Heroes’ second season so far. After only three episodes it already seems to be repeating itself.
Spoilers ahead and all that. No. You know what? If you have seen the first 2 episodes already, read on: episode 3 was pretty much the same thing, and any new developments are sure to be repeated in the next one.
Things we saw this episode that seem somewhat familiar:
The Wonder Twins
Yes, the latino girl kills people with her mind. We get it. I’ve only seen her do it a handful of times so far and already I’m ready to move on. Supposedly she’s done this dozen of times and she has to break down into tears (hur hur) each and every time? Hasn’t she realized that her brother can undo the effect? I know I have.
Emo Petrelli
And Peter…oh-my-fucking-god Peter! Why didn’t he just open the damn box? He’s “afraid he won’t like the person he finds in there”? Did he lose his balls along with his memory in that shipping container?
Claire
“Dad, what would happen if someone found out about me?”
“…weren’t you listening the last 20 times I told you?!”
Sylar
Why is this guy still alive? Yes he was an interesting antagonist last season…but there better be a damn good reason why this guy was a) saved, b) not under lock-and-key and c) shipped off (to the amazon?) with illusion-girl.
The only ’surprise’ this episode was that Hiro decided to help Kensei be Kensei, and not take over the role himself as I had originally suspected. He too suffered from sloppy writing however:
“Note 3: Ok Ando, history is fixed and I am coming home now.”
“Note 4: Sorry Ando, I can’t come home now. I am having too much fun playing with the past. What space-time continuum?”.
Also, having George Takei cameo as Hiro’s father last season was brilliant. Nichelle Nichols (she played Uhura in the original Star Trek) as Micah’s grandmother just seems tacked on:
“Hey, last season we had a Star Trek veteran and the fans loved it. Let’s do it again!”
“Yeah! We can even use it as an excuse to bring back Niki and Micah - two characters no one cares about - which will give us more material we can use to fill air time instead of, you know, advancing the plot.”
Alright alright, I admit I am being nit-picky. I just miss the confident, capable heroes of Season 1. I was really looking forward to Season 2 - and maybe my expectations were unreasonably inflated - but I can’t help feel disappointed with the way things are going so far. One thing is for sure; I have a deeper appreciation for shows with great writing.
Bwahaha, it kinda feels like the beginning of Lost season 3 (which I have still not watched). Overall, I am not that dissapoointed, but like you, I wish it would have rhe same gutso as the first season. Mybe it will pick up.
And HOLY CRAP! Dexter started season 2?? Argh! MUST WATCH NOW! (Oh, and if you want really good writing, watch Spaced. Best series ever. I actually just blogged about that yesterday.)
Yes Dex is back! And the series just keeps getting better! Season 2 picks up with amazing story hooks that keep you interested, and its not just the same characters, they’ve pretty much all changed or have been affected by event in season 1…ahhh it awesome.
