I had the privilege of seeing this movie last week at the Cinema du Parc dowtown, presented in its original Japanese with English subtitles. The premise of the story is simple enough: a new invention, the ‘DC Mini’ allows users to view and participate in others dreams. Right from the start, some of these devices are stolen and are being used for malicious purposes.
What follows is a visually and aurally pleasing story about love, morality and the sometimes-thin line between dreams and reality. I had heard tell that the film used ground-breaking animation techniques and while I am not artistically-informed enough to validate that claim, I can say that the movie is very colorful and at times beautiful.
On top of that, the soundtrack is simply amazing. Honestly, I would see it again just for the music. The film’s composer, Susumu Hirasawa had apparently said that the main theme should be released for free, and so you can find it available for download here. I highly recommend giving it a listen and that you see this movie in theaters if you still can.
awesome!
Argh! Lucky you! I really really wanted to see this in theatres! I have been waiting forever! I just HAD to be in Europe when it played…
I have heard the entire soundtrack and it is awesome. If you enjoyed that soundtrack, I reccomend you listen to the soundtrack to Paranoia Agent, which has teh same director and music composer as Paprika. After that, watch Perfect Blue (a most amazing Satoshi Kon film), Millenium Actress, and Paranoia Agent (PA is an anime that spans about 13 episodes).
